African Fish-eagle
Haliaeetus vocifer
This bird is a large, distinctive, chestnut-and-white eagle perches near rivers, lakes, and other waterbodies, where it catches fish with a graceful, shallow plunge into the water. It will also eat birds, reptiles and carrion.
This eagle is known for making one of the most distinctive bird sounds in Africa; it tosses its head back and releases a loud penetrating call.
Conservation
This bird is very common on many major rivers and lakes, often at high densities for such a large predator. In some areas it is negatively impacted by river degradation and hunting. Fortunately, its flexible feeding habits and ability to rapidly find new areas and sources of prey make it very adaptable.
