Nile Crocodile
Crocodylus niloticus
The Nile Crocodile is the largest reptile in Africa and can be found in freshwater rivers, lakes and swamps of Africa and western Madagascar. It has a long, streamlined body, short legs, and a powerful tail. The Nile Crocodile mainly eats fish, but it will ambush almost any animal that come to drink and scavenge carrion.
Did you know: A crocodile’s ectothermic metabolism is so efficient that they can survive for long periods in between meals.
Conservation
Nile Crocodile are threatened by human-wildlife conflict, and habitat loss and disturbance. As large and potentially dangerous predators, people often deliberately destroy nests and kill the adults. However, thanks to conservation efforts the population trend has stabilised.
