Helmeted Guineafowl
Numida meleagris
The Helmeted Guineafowl is a stocky bird. Its head is featherless with a helmet on the top and red “wattles” around its beak.
They mostly live on seeds and insects, but can also feed on roots, fruit, frogs and small reptiles. They live in warm, dry and open habitats with scattered shrubs and trees such as savannah or farmland.
Conservation
Helmeted Guineafowl are very common, although in some areas they are under threat from hunting and egg collecting. The degradation of their habitat, especially from more intensive agriculture, is another major threat.
